Asset Management

Private and public organisations that rely heavily on physical assets to deliver their business objectives face a myriad of challenges including:

  • Managing within tight financial constraints (and often having to do more with less)

  • Dealing with increasing stakeholder expectations (as customers become more informed buyers and as the business faces more competition and/or increasing regulatory constraints)

  • Managing the constantly changing risk profile across the entire lifecycle of their assets

Effective asset management enables an organisation to tackle these challenges in a structured, consistent and coordinated way.

Asset management is a journey that takes a substantial amount of time and focussed effort to get to a stage where it is at a level of sophistication that is appropriate for your organisation. And the journey never really ends as there is an on-going element of continuous improvement that needs to be undertaken to ensure your approach stays relevant and fit-for-purpose.

Knowing when, where and how to improve is just as important as the quality of the improvement itself. Otherwise how else can you ensure that you are investing your precious time, energy and money on the improvement activities that are going to truly add value to your business?

Cambia Consulting can help you improve your asset management, regardless of where you are in your journey.

Strategic Asset Management Planning

Strategic Asset Management Planning

At its highest level, Strategic Asset Management Planning is about ensuring asset management practices are aligned to, and support the delivery of, organisational objectives.  It requires the asset management planning process to be fully integrated within the strategic planning process of the organisation, and it therefore involves all functional areas of a business (e.g. Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Finance, Human Resources, Information and Communications Technology).

Strategic Asset Management Planning guides lower level planning processes, such as Asset Management Planning, Operational Planning, Maintenance Planning and Works Programme development. It also identifies initiatives for asset management improvement and processes for audit and review.

The key challenge is determining an appropriate approach to asset management for a specific organisation. Factors that influence the sophistication of the asset management approach for an organisation include its:

Risk Based Decision Frameworks

Risk Based Decision Frameworks

Establishing and documenting risk based decision making frameworks provides a way for organisations to consider cost, performance and risk in their asset management decision making. It also  provides a way to demonstrate transparent, consistent and defensible decisions on their assets to stakeholders.

Some asset management activities that can supported by a risk based decision framework includes:

  • Prioritisation of works programmes within or across asset groups

  • Development of routine management strategies for existing assets such as preventive maintenance, condition monitoring schedules or justification of an operate to failure strategy

  • Selection of a preferred option from a range of different options to continue to provide an existing service (e.g. renew / replace versus continuing to maintain), provide a higher level of service or to provide a new service

  • Identification of required Emergency Response plans

  • Identification of required Contingency plans to restore a service after a major asset failure or respond to a specific event

Cambia Consulting can add value by:

Asset Management Information Systems

An Asset Management Information System is a tool that enables users to store and manipulate asset data in an effort to make informed decisions across the entire asset lifecycle (i.e. planning, acquisition/creation, operations, maintenance, renewal, replacement and disposal).

The elements of an Asset Management Information System are:

  • Software – consisting of the application programs that process and enable you to interact with your asset information

  • Interfaces – that define and handle information exchange between different software and hardware components

  • Data – which is a key organisational resource and where its currency and accuracy need to be matched to an organisations business needs and asset management decision making processes

  • Procedures – so that users know how to use the system, and assist with maintaining data quality
